Mobile safari expeditions offer the excitement of sleeping at non-permanent tented camps in pristine wilderness locations across Botswana or Namibia. This safari travel style has become incredibly popular over the last years amongst travellers who are budget conscious yet want to live first-hand an adventurous safari experience in the African bush.

Unlike fixed permanent camps or lodges, these camps are set up in a different location every couple of days (mobile camping safaris). While your guide and camp crew remain the same throughout the trip, the site of the camp changes, allowing you to experience different wildlife sightings and scenery. As you journey on a 4×4 open vehicle through remote national parks and sometimes private concessions, the crew will be moving the camp to a new location.

Additionally, it is possible to set a tented camp in one specific location in the middle of the wilderness (camping safaris) for some days only. The best example to illustrate this type of safari is the mokoro trails in the Okavango Delta. This type of safari is shorter, and the equipment used is more rudimentary; smaller tents and a shared shower and bush toilet.

Fully serviced/catered mobile safaris

  • Fully serviced mobile camping safari: no participation required from the guests. The crew, including a guide (or two guides), a chef, camp assistants, and a housekeeping service, will look after your needs.
  • Fully catered camping safari: the operator will provide transportation, camping gear, meals and guided activities. Usually, only two crew members accompany the guests: one guide and one camp assistant/cook. Guests may have to help pitch their tents and take them down only.

Meals and drinks

While staying at the luxury mobile camp, all the meals and drinks (including wine, beer, soft drinks and water) are included. You will enjoy simple yet delicious meals cooked by the chef at the campfire.

Catered camping safaris in one specific location will include meals only. You will be able to purchase drinks from the accommodation where you will pre-night. Alternatively, our team will be happy to assist with pre-purchasing beverages from a local supermarket.

Accommodation

During the luxury mobile camping safari, you will sleep in spacious and comfortable Meru tents. Every tent has a private bathroom with a bush toilet, a bucket shower and a basin. In addition, the tents are equipped with beds, mattresses and linen.

Catered camping safari (one location) usually offers smaller Dome tents with the basic amenities. Some operators provide stretcher beds, whilst others only furnish sleeping bags.
